Bencic fights past Niemeier in first round on Berlin grass

Olympic champion Belinda Bencic had to fight hard on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Berlin grass court tournament, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 against German Jule Niemeier. World number 17 Bencic needed 2 hours 22 minutes to dispose of the 96th-ranked Niemeier, breaking in the third and final game of the third set. The match was similarly tight as their three-set tussle last year in the same round at the Berlin event where Swiss Bencic went on to reach the final.
