Berliners take a traditional New Year’s Day dip in rare mild weather

Members of a Berlin swimming group that gathers to enjoy chilly waters enjoyed a traditional New Year’s Day dip in the city’s Orankesee lake. While in the past, members have had to break through a layer of ice to reach the water, this year, their swim had a spring-like feel, with the water temperature reaching 5.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday. More than a dozen members of the association took advantage of the unusually mild weather to kick off the year with a swim. The Berliner Seehunde group says it has around 130 members aged between 12 and 90.
