Chemistry Nobel honours pair for ‘greener’ molecular construction

The 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded on Wednesday to Benjamin List and David MacMillan for developing an “ingenious” new method for building molecules. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm said their insights had advanced pharmaceutical research and “made chemistry greener.” List and MacMillan, working independently of each other, developed, in 2000, “a third type of catalysis,” which is a process of speeding up the rate of a chemical reaction.
