German carmaker Volkswagen opened a battery laboratory at its US plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Wednesday. Systems for electric cars are to be tested and further developed there, regional boss Scott Keogh announced. Volkswagen already operates a similar specialized centre in the German city of Braunschweig, for example. Another German city, Salzgitter, will also be a hub for all things related to electric car batteries. Construction on a planned factory producing battery cells is due to start there in July.
