German CDU leader welcomes tank deliveries, but says Scholz dithered

Friedrich Merz, the leader of Germany’s conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), welcomed the centre-left government’s decision to supply Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine after weeks of wavering. “The decision is right,” the CDU chairman told dpa. At the same time, Merz said Chancellor Olaf Scholz had dragged his feet before finally coming to the right conclusion. Merz said Scholz should have made the announcement on Sunday, at the the Franco-German Council of Ministers meeting in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron.
