German diplomat appointed deputy UN Afghanistan envoy

German diplomat Markus Potzel will become the new deputy United Nations representative to Afghanistan. Potzel will succeed Mette Knudsen of Denmark as deputy head of the UN Afghanistan Mission (UNAMA), UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced in New York on Friday. Potzel, who was born in 1965, has worked as a diplomat for about 30 years and was most recently the designated German ambassador to Afghanistan.
