German upper house passes new pandemic package as cases rise

The upper house of the German parliament on Friday passed new legislation aimed at containing the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic as infections and hospitalizations rose across the country. Despite initial expectations of opposition from the conservative bloc, which dominates the house in which the 16 states are represented, the Bundesrat passed the package unanimously. It replaces emergency provisions which are to expire on Thursday.
