Iraq’s influential cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Wednesday called for early parliamentary elections and told his loyalists to continue their protest sit-in, a move likely to prolong the country’s political crisis. His followers have staged a sit-in since Saturday at the parliament, located inside Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone.
