Koran burning, Turkey’s looming election complicate Sweden’s NATO bid

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has slammed the door for now on Sweden’s effort to become a NATO member following a Koran burning in Stockholm. “If you do not show respect for the Turkish Republic or the religious faith of Muslims, then you cannot get any support from us on the NATO issue,” Erdoğan said in Ankara on Monday evening. It did not help that the Swedish government quickly distanced itself from the Koran burning.
