A mentally ill man who drove his car into a crowd of people in western Berlin, killing a teacher and injuring 14 children, acted with intention, the mayor of the German capital said on Thursday. A police probe into Wednesday’s tragedy had shown “it was the act of a severely mentally impaired person,” Franziska Giffey told public broadcaster RBB, adding that investigators were still trying to decipher the perpetrator’s “confused statements” with the help of an interpreter.
