Pope baptizes 16 babies at Sistine Chapel after skipping last year

Pope Francis baptized 16 children in the Sistine Chapel on Sunday, a tradition that was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Around 130 relatives and godparents of the children were present in the church famous for its frescoes by the Italian Renaissance painter Michelangelo. “Your task is to preserve the Christian identity of the children,” Francis said in his sermon at the altar in front of the wall fresco of “The Last Judgement.” The baptism ceremony at the Sistine Chapel has taken place for decades. It was cancelled last year over Covid-19 concerns.
