Virginia Beach: Sunny paradise a stone’s throw from Washington DC

Chris Pace stands in the shallow water, fully focused. He has rubber boots on, but they’re filling up from the top – after all he’s standing waist-deep in an outcrop of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach. Pace fishes around in the salty water until he gets a hold of the large, algae-covered cage. He hoists it onto his small boat. “I put the young oysters in here about a year ago,” says Pace, who owns the Lynnhaven River Oyster Company. Now he has to check on them regularly.
